Jalapeños

One of the milder chile peppers available ranging in heat at between 2500 and 8000 on the Scoville scale.

Pronounced “ha-la-pen-yo”, these chiles can be found fresh, sliced and pickled in jars. They are usually about 5 -10 cmd long

Usually found green, they can also be found in their riper red state.

The seeds and veins inside the jalapeño adds the heat, so if you want to tone the heat down remove these before cooking or eating.

Pickled jalapeños are always hot as the chiles are simply sliced before pickling.

Chipotle, pronounced chi-pote-lay, are jalapeños, which have been smoked, although other chiles are smoked as well. Chipotle sauces are becoming popular condiments in the UK, which is great news for us.

Use chipotles when making chilli con carne, they add a real smoky depth of flavour.
